Big
is Beautiful: Emphasising Scale in Community Arts
Steve Dixon and Lloyd Peters (University of Salford)
Abstract:
This e-article explores issues of scale, methodology and ‘product-orientation’ in community arts, through analysis of six devised community film dramas produced by the authors. These adopted a ‘product-led’ and ‘big is beautiful’ approach, with large budgets and the involvement of hundreds of participants. The article uses the archival, audio-visual and navigational potentials of the online article form to link ten sections of critical analysis and argument with extensive documentation of the projects discussed, including press cuttings, official reports, stills galleries, film synopses and video clips.

By Ear: new ways of teaching and researching radio drama
Alan Beck (University of Kent)
Abstract:
This monograph looks at the hopeful revival of radio drama in UK universities. The author relates research projects to teaching and gives an individual account of developing the radio drama curriculum. Problems are raised, including the strengthening of links between academic research, the B.B.C. and the radio industry. Theoretical issues are raised also, such as ‘is there a text in this classroom?’ The article ponders ‘what is radio drama?’ from within the drama curriculum. There are hypertext links to resource sites.
